The National Institute of Psychiatry Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz, formerly called: Mexican Institute of Psychiatry, was established on December 26, 1979. Its founder, Dr. Ramón de la Fuente, recognized the importance of creating a Mexican institution dedicated to the research and treatment of mental health problems. As a result of his interest in developing an academic institution devoted to the study of Psychiatry, he created a strong Institute whose main aims are:
- To develop scientific research in the psychiatric and mental health fields.
- To train and form its personnel.
- To provide continuous education to the staff as well as to health professionals.
- To implement integral attention to patients.
- To advice health professionals, the private sector, and the public about mental health care.
Since September 7, 1988, a new decree gave the Institute a more specific structure. As a result, the Institute expanded its objectives and perspectives.
Today, the National Institute of Psychiatry belongs to the group of ten National Health Institutes in Mexico coordinated by the Secretary of Health. In addittion, the Institute is a decentralized and public organization with its own budget and administration.
The Institute is located in south Mexico City and, is composed by several buildings that include laboratories, clinical services as well as faculty and administrative offices. Since its opening in 1979, the Institute has provided a wide variety of mental and health care services. Nowadays, the Institute develops updated scientific research within the newest psychiatric scientific perspectives.
The Institute offers to researchers, doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, staff in the psychiatric field and mental health professionals the technical and scientific means necessary ftor their professional development.
The Institute also contributes to the diffusion of scientific research by developing educational programs to the public as well as to specific groups. Additionally, the Institute publishes journals as well as informative bulletins, and participates actively in national and international forums and conferences.
